“Thou Shalt Not Kill”–Usurping God’s Authority in Taking Life

The commandment, “Thou shalt not kill,” really should read, “Thou shalt not murder.”  “Murder” denotes malice aforethought, a deliberately selfish act in taking a life.

“Hands that shed innocent blood” is one of the seven things that the LORD (Yahweh) hates and is an abomination to Him (1).

At the core of this commandment lies a spiritual seed.  For “the law is spiritual” (2).  The Ten Commandment Law comes out of the heart of the eternal Spirit’s.  He is the Giver of life, and He is the Taker (3)

When someone takes a life, he has exalted himself into God’s position of being the Taker of life.  God creates life, and He is the one to take life back.  When one takes life, he usurps God’s position and authority and essentially thumbs his nose at God.

Homicide, suicide, and abortion then fall into this category.  For who gave any of us authority to be the taker of life?  That is God’s role.  And make no mistake.  Abortion is a premeditated act to “shed innocent blood.”  For although the fetus is not breathing, it is alive.  It has life.  It is a living organism.  God has given it life.  And nobody has the right to take life, especially the innocent, helpless unborn.

But isn’t this the spiritual battle that’s been raging in the heavens since the beginning, and now rages here on earth?  Satan, that wicked spirit, is now sent down here to earth to deceive and tempt mankind into doing what he did when he said, “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God…I will be like the most High” (4).

There it is.  Satan’s heart dictates usurping God’s authority and, consequently, his laws.

When humans commit murder, suicide, or abortion, they yield to temptation to usurp God’s power of life and death.  It is a wickedly subtle move, but at its core, this is what is spiritually happening.

It takes a hard heart to commit these acts.  This hardening is a spiritual shift from the tender faith of the innocent child to one so lifted up that they presume to dictate the lifespan of another human being.  How haughty can you get?

And what will ultimately become of Satan, the usurper and those that follow his ways?  “Thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit” (5).  An inglorious yet appropriate fate awaits.  KWH

  1. God’s law is unchanging. The fruit of breaking that law unchanging. Those who place themselves above that law are deceiving themselves and will join their father in his eternal destruction. Jesus told the false Jews in John chapter 8 that they were of their father the devil and the lusts of their father they would do. Multitudes need to repent of their ungodly ways.

  2. Thank you, Leon, for this very truthful comment. There will be a reckoning when Christ returns to eradicate the evil from off of His earth. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth for sure…KWH

Taking Gods place or ursurping His authority also occurs when men of higher learning, who society looks to as an authority, make claims to know things that are responsible for or the cause of things…as in health care solutions or things that are responsible for some sicknessess and diseases…(as well as in other areas of life where claims are being made that they are scientific but they lack verifiable evidence that true science requires before they make the claim that something is acepted scientifically)…where these claims have not been proven to be responsible for these claims they make…and yet they ignore these findings of science…and insist they are true or factual.

God has gifted some men and women with knowledge to deal with those areas in life we know as the sciences and when these individuals discover or uncover answers that will help in relieving sickness and disease and their associated suffering…if they really can provide these bemefits…they will have verifiable evidence to substantiate their claims…and those who make claims like these but who cannot substantiate these types of claims they are making…then the question is, are they not ursurping the authority of science (in fact lying)…if so are they not in fact breaking the 9th commandment as well as ursurping the authority of science and engaged in fraud.

As Gods children, we know God is THE authority we look to for all we do, and as you have so very clearly pointed out above in your post…He has also provided man with the sciences that has enabled man to uncover many of the secrets locked in our natural world and in their discovery of these things, those things they are truly revealing regarding what these scientists say they are for or can do…if they can…they will be able to provide documented evidence…the proof needed to support these findings for them to be accepted as true or factual.
This is how science becomes one of the authorities men can look to as trustworthy when it comes to things men declare to be true or factual and how it makes these findings they have uncovered safe for us to trust they can do what they say they can do…just we we have Gods Word to look to for things men say are “according” to God…we can look to His Word to be sure they are from Him…and by so doing when we find that they are according to His Word we can embrace them knowing that by so doing we will be safe in so doing.
So ursurping authority is really a very serious act that covers or includes the very mind set of anyone not interested in truth. Be that of God and His Word or that of things men have been able to establish as authoratative that is presented as such that is not…as we see Timothy being warned of in 1 Tim. 6:20.

This comment is in reference to the first paragraph of my comment above. Leaving one with a better idea of how true science is ursurped than was conveyed in the paragraph this is replacing:
Taking Gods place or ursurping His authority also occurs when men of higher learning, who society looks to as an authority, make claims to know things that are responsible for or the cause of things…as in health care solutions or things that are responsible for some sicknessess and diseases…(as well as in other areas of life where claims are being made that they are scientific but they lack verifiable evidence that true science requires before they make the claim that something is acepted scientifically)…where these claims have not been proven to be responsible for these claims they make…and yet they ignore these findings of science…and insist they are true or factual…becaue they believe they are…but do not have the proof or evidence science requires for them to be accepted as scientific. They make themselves and what they believe the “autrority.” Ursurping the authority of science…leaving them not only not able to prove their claims but unable to produce the results they claim these services or products will do.

  5. William, thanks for the comment. You have addressed the problem: man has become his own god and has forgotten the Creator.

wayneman…I wish the problem was quite that succinct, for certainly that is precisely why it repented God in His heart that he had made man, and eventually brought the flood upon the earth…but now it is different…for the error of man we have before us now is quite different.
You see, we have many who are proclaiming to be ministers of God, His prophets…those who would have us to believe they have not forgotten God…that they have the good news…and many are following them.
Certainly there are many who have chosen to reason in their own mind those things they believe are right…who have ignored or distorted His Word…and certainly they are lost and headed for hell if they remain in this way…but another are those who I have described above…who say they are messangers of God and many are following their teachings, believing they are right with God…but they have been deceived…they have believed a lie…and if they continue in this way…they will die as we all will, but tragically they will miss heaven…so in short…as scripture clearly points out…few will be saved.
Millions believe, but they believe a lie…they believe they are right with God but they are not. They believe they are heaven bound but they are not.
As we read in Proverbs 14:12…There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.
So yes you are right, many have looked to their own wisdon, have become their own God…but tragically there are millions who have as I pointed out above…millions who would readily admit they believe in God, believe in the Bible, Believe in Jesus…in reality…they are still their own God as you pointed out above…but they would say they are not their own God…but they are, even though they say they believe in God and in the Bible and in Jesus…they still run their own lives.
